PETA AKESTER of East Kurrajong is walking the Northern Territory’s 223-kilometre Larapinta Trail, to save greyhounds from needless death.
Mrs Akester and her friend, Lisa Foster, begin the trek on May 10 and hope to complete it in 12 days.
They are raising money for Friends of the Hound, a dog rescue group through which Mrs Akester adopted her own greyhounds, Bouncer and Ivy, five years ago.
Mrs Akester wants to save more greyhounds from being put down when they can no longer run fast enough to win a race.
‘‘I’d like to ban greyhound racing,’’ she said.
She also wants more people to consider having greyhounds as pets.
‘‘They love children, they can be good with small animals and they only need 15-20 minutes exercise a day,’’ Mrs Akester said.
