Three games just isn't enough. The NBL needs to go back to a five-game grand final series.
As is seemingly always the case with the National Basketball League, it's not easy to predict the future but one thing is for certain - the discrepancy is too great between the length of the season and the relatively brief playoff series in the current competition format.
With the new team in Brisbane still not guaranteed, the Wollongong Hawks in voluntary administration and the next TV rights deal still not sorted, there are many issues facing head office.
But the NBL should be doing everything possible to bring back the five-game contest for the trophy, a format last seen in 2009 when the South Dragons (remember them?) downed Melbourne Tigers (remember them, too?) in the fifth match of the series.
Surely having more playoff matches will help find a TV partner (or two) and will boost coffers. The Taipans' first grand final game against the Breakers - to be played on Friday night - sold out within 90 minutes.
If this year's series goes to three games, you would think the Cairns faithful will snap up those tickets in even less time.
The Cairns v Breakers premiership decider is not the one that the marketing department would have desired - one of Australia's most remote small markets against the Auckland-based franchise. You never hear from the conspiracy theorists at a time like this. You know the types - that annoying "expert" who reckons competitions are set up to ensure the big-market sides are always the last teams standing at season's end.
While it may have logistical difficulties, it's clear this match-up features the two best teams for season 2014-15.
The Taipans' fortunes have swung back and mainly forth on the form of their star point guard, American import Scottie Wilbekin.
When he started the season with a bang, Cairns rocketed out of the gates. He was then scouted, rival teams clogged up the lane to make him shoot more from outside and his team racked up losses.
Wilbekin regained his shooting touch and the Taipans again went on a tear, deservedly taking out the minor premiership. Apart from the bleach blond style he was rocking mid-season, Wilbekin has been a near-perfect fit for Cairns.
Along the way they racked up three wins from their four clashes with the Breakers.
The three-time champions, who gave up their title to Perth last season when playmaker Cedric Jackson went to Europe and the team's prospects went south, have the edge in big-game experience but that may not be enough to overcome Cairns' home-court advantage.
The Breakers were impressive in ending the streaking Adelaide 36ers in two semi-final meetings but the Taipans also showed their mettle in overcoming the Wildcats in their series opener at home despite a two-point third quarter and then silencing Perth Arena down the stretch in the second match.
Midway through the final quarter, the Wildcats were on a roll. The crowd was roaring them to victory and they were starting to get those calls they invariably seem to get when their defence is at its suffocating best.
But Wilbekin stayed composed and Cairns not only got the win, they crushed the Wildcats down the stretch.
Taipans coach Aaron Fearne has done well getting a greater sum from the parts of his team.
Cameron Gliddon and Alex Loughton complement Wilbekin's scoring, centre Matt Burston is using his size to his advantage - something he has not always done - and Cameron Tragardh is no longer trigger happy but a happy Trigger, despite coming off the bench, because he's a more effective scorer as he's more selective.
Starting an import off the bench usually sends alarm bells ringing but Fearne's use of Torrey Craig as a sixth man has been a masterstroke.
Expectations are high in Cairns. This is the only national sporting franchise the North Queensland city has ever had. They've only ever been to the big dance once before - a 2-1 loss to the Breakers in 2011.
They can cope with the hype. Wilbekin is a cool customer. Fearne rarely looks flustered on the sidelines. The Taipans reflect the character of their coach and floor general.
The Breakers cannot be written off. Jackson was unlucky to miss out on MVP honours to Townsville's Brian Conklin, coach Dean Vickerman is a smart operator and centre Ekene Ibekwe has been the best defensive big man all season.
You can quite easily see each game of this series going to the home team.
It should be a great contest. If only it was a little longer.
