DODGEBALL
If you recognise the names White Goodman and Peter La Fleur – get excited.
YMCA at the Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium is preparing to launch their new winter sports program that will include super soccer, Fast5 netball and dodgeball.
Dodgeball, made famous by the US film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughan, has swelled in popularity since the movie’s release in 2004.
The stadium has added men’s dodgeball on Friday nights to their already popular mixed competition.
YMCA Sports coordinator Braydon Greentree said the social aspect of the sport had made it appealing to players.
“We only started dodgeball a year ago and the comp has grown so much since then,” he said.
“It is competitive but so many come here for the social side.
“We’ve got music playing and people bring their kids, it’s not just a competitive thing but there’s a real social, family-friendly vibe as well.”
Dodgeball is a simple game.
Five players on each team line up against their opposition on either side of an allotted court and throw small, foam balls – about the size of a junior soccer ball – at one another.
Greentree said the film had also acted as a training aid for new players.
“Everybody who comes in for the first time and says they don’t know how to play, the first thing we ask them is if they’ve seen the movie,” he said.
“The only difference is when you get hit you aren’t eliminated, we use a points system.”
The stadium will also host mixed Fast5 netball on Tuesday nights and a women’s competition on Wednesday mornings.
Fast5 netball allows only five players on the court per team, down from the seven used in regular netball.
The new competitions start in the first week of April at the indoor stadium in Stewart Street, South Windsor.
