If you always wanted to be a fireman, this is your chance.
If you’re physically fit, have a strong team commitment and community spirit, then Windsor Fire and Rescue station needs you on their team. But it’s not just for men, women are also welcome to apply.
Four new retained firefighters will be recruited to 81 Station. The current paid team of 12 men and one woman respond to emergencies at all hours of the day and are staffed on an on-call basis.
They can work from home or at their workplace; retained firefighters play an important role in protecting their community by attending fires, emergencies and community education programs.
Windsor Station commander Kim Roche said being a firefighter was a rewarding job and anyone was welcome to apply if they met the basic requirements.
‘‘People interested should be fit, healthy and a team worker, because many of the situations are quite challenging and require commitment,’’ Commander Roche said.
‘‘It’s also important to live or work within a reasonable distance from the fire station to be able to respond quickly in an emergency. All applicants have to be flexible and available at short notice.’’
Retained firefighter Stephen Crawford has been with the station for two and a half years and says he is looking forward to meeting the new recruits.
‘‘We work in such a tight-knit team so we are all pretty keen to meet the newbies and teach them all we can to get them up and running,’’ Mr Crawford said.
‘‘We all joined for the same purpose and that’s to help the community. I’m sure the new employees have that in mind, too, and that’s why we will all work so well together.’’
Mr Roche said no formal qualifications were needed, just some common sense and enthusiasm.
The new firefighters will receive on-the-job training, tuition in first aid, learn how to use specialised equipment as well as becoming more self-reliant and confident.
All potential employees need to have a NSW driver’s licence and are required to meet some medical and physical standards.
Applications close February 20.
