A late fight back from the Sydney Blue Sox wasn’t enough for a victory against the Brisbane Bandits, going down 9-5 in Brisbane on Sunday night.

The loss means the Blue Sox ended their four match series against the Bandits in a draw, despite tightly fought wins in game two and three earlier on the weekend.

The home side got off to a blistering start, scoring runs in each of the first five innings, while also managing to keep the Blue Sox scoreless until the top of the seventh.

Scoring was shared around the batsmen for the Bandits, with eight players recording runs. Granden Goetzman top scored with two runs, while both Maxx Tissenbaum and Thomas Coyle scored home runs.

Sydney pitcher Jaspreet Shergill had a game he would rather forget against his former club, with the ex-Bandit pitching the first four innings in which he gave up seven runs.

By the bottom of the fifth, Brisbane had amassed a 9-0 lead. Despite putting runners on bases in every innings except the eighth, Sydney failed to make an impact on the scoreboard in the early innings.

After a scoreless sixth innings, Sydney finally got off the mark at the top of the seventh, with Tyler Bortnick and Alex Howe both scoring to bring the margin back to seven.

With both teams failing to score in the eighth, the Blue Sox needed eight runs to win the match. After two outs, a Josh Dean three-run home run gave the Blue Sox a glimmer of hope, narrowing the gap to four runs.

However, hopes of a miraculous comeback were short lived, with Tyler Baker being caught out on the very next ball, resulting in the end of the match.

The Blue Sox will take on the Canberra Cavalry this weekend, who are both tied for fourth position on the ABL ladder.

This weekend’s matches are the last of the regular season, with the top three advancing through to the play-offs.

Sydney are one win outside the top three, with Brisbane in third place.
