Hawkesbury police welcomed three new recruits to the force on Monday after the students were sworn in at an attestation ceremony on Friday at the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn.
As their first official week of duty as probationary constables, Jessie Wilkinson, Geoffrey Goldsmith and Eliza Gawthorne will complete 12-months of on-the-job training and study by distance education before they officially graduate with an associate degree in policing practice.
Three of 313 sworn in, the recruits will be confirmed to the rank of constable once training is complete.
Hawkesbury superintendent Steve Egginton said the officers’ first day is only the first of many milestones in a challenging, yet rewarding career.
“These recruits have shown great dedication and spirit to pass the requirements of the course at the police academy and I’m sure they will approach the next phase of their career with the same enthusiasm,” Superintendent Egginton said.
“The first day officially on the job can be daunting but the Hawkesbury is a great community and we are excited to have these officers join our ranks and guide them through the start of their new career.”
Supt Egginton said there will be many challenges throughout the coming year and beyond, but policing is always interesting and there can be incredible rewards.
“The best way to reduce crime is to ensure we have the resources to provide local solutions to local problems.
“These three new officers are a welcome boost to policing resources in the Hawkesbury area,” he said.
Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the ceremony marked the end of the recruits’ first chapter of policing and represents the start of the next chapter.
‘‘They will experience the great challenges and rewards of serving the community as a police officer,’’ Commissioner Scipione said.
