Hawkesbury Police will be cracking down on speeding, drink driving and seatbelts over the Christmas and New Year period in an effort to reduce the rate of injury and fatal collisions.
HHP Senior Sergeant Scott Walker, said that once the weather warms up, residents start to move around more resulting in an increase in drink driving and speeding which is the largest problem on Hawkesbury roads.
‘‘People caught drink driving in the morning appears to be on the increase in the Hawkesbury,’’ Sgt Walker said.
‘‘We often get asked why we do stationary random breath tests so early in the morning, but it is quite common for drivers to be detected over the limit on their way to work. Drivers need to remember that alcohol can remain in your system for a considerable period of time afterwards.’’
Every Highway Patrol (HHP) car available in the region will be on Hawkesbury roads with annual leave for officers cancelled over the holiday season.
During December, Operation Compliance will target driving using mobile phones, keeping left, school zone and car equipment offences.
Sgt Walker said there will also be an increase in police in the Hawkesbury over the Christmas and New Year period as part of Operation Safe Arrival with a strong focus on drink driving, speeding and seatbelts during the festive season.
The operation will also coincide with double demerit points from December 24 to January 4, 2015 which will lead into Operation Safe Arrival over the Australia Day long weekend and end of the school holiday period.
Operation Lochness, which targets speeding and drink driving, will continue until the end of February, 2015.
