Hawkesbury band 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) have had a huge week.
On Monday, November 24, band members Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin were in L.A. at the American Music Awards where they performed the 1979 Romantics hit, What I Like About You .
They went on to win New Artist of the Year, turning to social media to thank their fans.
‘‘Can’t believe you guys won us an American Music Award (AMA) for New Artist of the Year,’’ the band posted. ‘‘So insane ... can’t even grasp how we’re feeling, thank you so much!’’
In their acceptance speech drummer Ashton, a former Richmond High student, thanked fans and said ‘‘this really shows a little band from Sydney can do great things’’.
The band flew into Sydney on Tuesday last week with fellow boy band One Direction, ahead of opening at the ARIAs on Wednesday, singing their debut single, She Looks So Perfect, which later won them their first ARIA award for Song of the Year.
Posting to their eight million Facebook fans, the boys expressed their gratitude.
‘‘What an incredible night,’’ they posted.
‘‘We’ll remember it forever, our first ARIA Award for ‘Song Of The Year’... you guys always make awesome stuff happen.’’
The boys’ first headlining tour, kicking off on May 4, 2015 in Portugal, has 19 sold-out shows so far.
5SOS have sold out shows in Sydney and Perth and are back home on June 20 to perform at Allphones Arena in Sydney, their first stop in Australia.
