Children in Berkshire Park and surrounding suburbs can play basketball and netball following the opening of new courts last Thursday.
On the flat space behind the hall on Sixth Road that hosts Berkshire Park Giggles playgroup sits a dual-purpose court, with hoops and backboards for both netball and basketball.
The new courts are just a few metres away from recently completed play equipment.
Lisa Pace, a mother of three children who attend the play group, said the extra facilities will give her children something to use once they're too big for the playground.
"It definitely makes it attractive to bring my kids here," Ms Pace said of the additional courts.
The rural area around Berkshire Park has previously had limited access to sports facilities, especially for younger children and teenagers who don't drive.
The Berkshire Park, Llandilo and Shanes Park Community Action Group has been lobbying and working with the state government and Penrith Council to put these facilities together in a convenient location for residents.
Mario Pace, who lives just a few streets away, worked on the project with the action group.
"For a long time we had nothing here and now we can be part of sporting activities as a bigger community," he said.
"The council staff and contractors did a great job putting this together and it is a very valuable addition to the community."
Funding for the project came from the state government's Community Building Partnership Program, which put in $35,000 over two years while Penrith Council added another $6000.
Penrith mayor Ross Fowler said the action group worked well to advocate for their community and build a partnership with Londonderry MP Bart Bassett as well as the council.
The site — which is extremely flat because decades ago it was one end of a runway — is also being developed to one day hold a modified soccer field to give local residents more options for their children.
