Michael Ennis has three children, a backyard swimming pool and a passion that springs from the horror of the idea of any of them drowning.
"A lot of people out there think it won't happen to their loved ones but a young child can drown in as little as 30 seconds," he says.
The Cronulla rugby league player is an ambassador for the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER week that kicks off on Monday.
More than 400 swimming schools across the country will take place in a range of activities, from safety-focused swimming classes for children and seminars for parents to learning relevant first aid such as administering CPR.
The week is a timely reminder of the dangerous side of some of our favourite summer activities with just over a third of drownings occurring in the summer months.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for Australian children under five years old. Last year, 20 children drowned before their fourth birthday. Most of these drowning deaths, 70 per cent, took place in swimming pools.
"As a father, it's something I feel passionate about and I'll be taking the necessary precautions to ensure my family swims safer this summer," Ennis says.
Ennis is part of all-star cast that includes NRL's Justin Hodges, Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and Port Adelaide's Ollie Wines.
The week will begin after a scorching Sunday that will send Sydneysiders into the water in droves.
Sydney is bracing for a top of 39 degrees in the CBD on Sunday, and higher in the west.
The western suburbs will experience the hottest five-day run in November for at least two decades with temperatures rising above 40 degrees last Friday.
The fire risk is expected to be re-elevated from "high" on Saturday to "severe".
The warmer temperatures will linger until Tuesday, when it is forecast to drop below 19 degrees.
