If you hold a blue concession card, you can get down to Community FoodCare at Hawkesbury Church today.
The not-for-profit program is open every Thursday, and provides cheap groceries for those who are doing it tough for whatever reason.
The service has been running for a month now, sourcing its goods from Food Bank in Wetherill Park, with clients coming from as far as Riverstone, North Richmond, Kurrajong and even Quakers Hill since they’ve heard about it.
The service gets in sausages and pies, frozen meals, milk, bread, sometimes meat, and canned and jarred goods. Even better, vegies and fruit are free.
Clients put together their own hamper, with most coming in at around half the price paid at the supermarket.
Volunteer and organiser Zoe Mullen has two other volunteers from the church helping her and since opening has had offers of help from three clients who were accessing the service.
Mrs Mullen is a member of Hawkesbury Church and had already been volunteering for a day a week helping those who came to the church who couldn’t always afford their electricity or gas bills. Some didn’t even have enough money for food.
Now Mrs Mullen volunteers an extra day a week with Community FoodCare, and said business was ‘‘slowly building up’’.
‘‘As a church member it’s a great way for us to get out to the community and help them in other ways,’’ Mrs Mullen said.
If clients are in difficult circumstances but don’t have a blue concession card, they may still be able to access the service after a short interview.
The store is open from 10am-1pm every Thursday. It’s on the corner of Macquarie and Brabyn Streets, Windsor.
