A KURRAJONG Village subdivision was approved by Council last week, amid some concerns about the reliability of the water supply for existing residents.
The development of a 23-lot subdivision on the corner of Old Bells Line of Road and Vincent Road went to a councillor briefing session two weeks ago to discuss issues including water.
Despite being approved, many councillors were still concerned about the unreliability of the water supply for existing residents.
‘‘I’m concerned about the water supply in Kurrajong as most residents know it’s not adequate,’’ Cr Paul Ras-mussen said, referring to water pressure.
‘‘Do we know what the impact on other residents will be?’’
Council’s director of city planning, Matt Owens said if Sydney Water said they could supply water adequately, Council was happy with that.
The site was zoned residential 40 years ago. The application meets DCP and LEP requirements and has been approved by Sydney Water.
Cr Mary Lyons-Buckett said despite Sydney Water being the authority, it was Council’s responsibility to ensure the security of water.
‘‘We can’t leave the community vulnerable if there’s no evidence of adequate supply. We have an obligation to be satisfied that we are adequately supplying water to residents.’’
Kurrajong resident Fiona Smith said Kurrajong Community Forum was also concerned about water supply, stating Sydney Water issued rebates to some residents a couple of years before due to inadequacy.
A Sydney Water spokesperson said the water supply to Kurrajong met all requirements, and an assessment indicated ‘‘the performance of the system would not be reduced’’. The spokesperson also said there were many reasons why [water] pressure may vary.
‘‘This includes peak use in the local network, elevation of the house compared to the street, and the private plumbing to each dwelling — each customer is responsible for the private system after the connection to the main.’’
Sydney Water didn’t reply to why residents received rebates two years ago.
