IT WAS ready, set, race at Londonderry Pony Club where 130 of the state’s top Pony Club riders took part in the State Mounted Games Championships.
Held from September 19-21, there were 26 teams from places including Camden Haven on the mid north coast, Wollongong and Canberra, Londonderry, Megalong Valley and Sun Valley.
The competition was fierce as riders took part in games such as Balloon Bursting, Postman’s Chase and the Tackbox Race.
Brittany Newham, 18, was one of Londonderry's most experienced Mounted Games riders, having competed at a state level since the age of 10.
"There are times when you’re at a flat gallop and leaning so low off your horse that you could touch the ground and you think, whoa, that was a bit scary, but that’s a big part of what makes it so fun," she said.
Pony Club NSW Mounted Games coach Anthony Newham said speed is the key but not the only element.
"Athleticism, agility and control are also crucial in order to manoeuvre around obstacles, vault on and off the horse and pass items to team-mates, all at full speed," he said.
Competitors ranged from experienced Pony Club associate riders in their 20’s, to those competing at a state level for the first time.
Nine year-old Londonderry rider Madeline Nickson, was the youngest competitor and admitted to feeling some pressure.
"I’ve been really nervous but I’m glad I’m riding with a team and everyone has helped me with the riding and the games," she said.
Ryan Cox from Bungendore, 21, was among the competitors who travelled to Londonderry for the event.
"Catching up with mates, and just enjoying the weekend away is just as great as the riding," he said.
Team 'Radioactive’ from Bungendore were named Junior Champions, for the second year in a row, while the Champion Senior Team was the ‘Zone 16 Masters’ from Murrumbateman.
