More than 2700 Hawkesbury residents are living with the after-effects of a stroke, says the National Stroke Foundation.
So far this year, 311 instances of stroke have been recorded in the district.
During Stroke Awareness Week (September 8 to 14), the foundation is challenging residents to take action by learning about how to reduce the risk of strokes.
A stroke occurs when a blood clot travels to the brain and blocks the flow of blood. A stroke can affect memory, cause slurred speech and bodily weakness.
Free risk assessments and stroke analysis tests will be held at Blooms Chemists in Windsor Riverview centre, Richmond Marketplace and Windsor Marketplace until September 21.
More than 4000 challenge stroke activities are expected to be held across the country this month ranging from morning teas, to fun runs, personal challenges, workplace displays and community information sessions.
