Arndell Anglican College Junior School students celebrated Book Week last week, with a writer’s workshop hosted by popular children’s author Patricia Bernard, and a book character parade.
Arndell English teacher Carolyn Anslow said Patricia Bernard told students her personal story of leaving school at Year 9 without a job, then returning a year later after realising the importance of an education.
he encouraged each child to choose a special middle name. She calls herself ‘‘Patricia Fabulous Bernard’’.
She walked students through the writing process and encouraged them to use their imaginations. Bernard helped them create interesting characters and exciting adventures and even treated them to an impromptu story,” she told the Gazette.
Year 4 pupil Caitlin Fraser said she enjoyed writing a story and listening to Bernard explain how to build an adventure.
‘‘I learnt how to write better stories and create different and interesting characters.
‘‘It was exciting to meet a real author who has written and published 65 books,” Caitlin said.
The book parade was reportedly a huge success, with parents, grandparents and special friends coming to watch.
“The most popular characters were Harry Potters, Hermiones, Disney princesses and Cats in Hats,” Ms Anslow said.
