When Godolphin was still racing as Darley in Australia, Sweynesse was earmarked as a 2000-metres horse and perhaps the right colt for the Spring Champion Stakes.
Two runs into his career the goal has not changed, in fact the focus has sharpened, after Sweynesse remained unbeaten in his return over 1400m at Rosehill on Saturday.
"I have to say Peter Snowden always thought he was a nice horse and said he would be a 2000m horse. That's why we gave him plenty of time," Godolphin racing manager Jason Walsh said.
"He was our first winner in NSW when John [O'Shea] took over at Kembla [in May] and we put him away for the spring, and he has taken a big step by winning.
"The Spring Champion is on the radar for him but we just have to work out how to get there."
Sweynesse overcame being held up until the 200m as he came from well back in the field and charged along the rails to beat First Seal by three-quarters of a length with something in hand.
Kerrin McEvoy has a lot of time for the son of Lonhro but admitted to being a bit worried halfway down the straight.
"He had plenty to give but it was a case of waiting for the run to come," McEvoy said.
"He's got a nice horse's stamp about him and he's two from two. I had to ride him a bit steady from the gate and he was pretty electric in the ground when I asked him."
Sweynesse holds entries for the Spring Champion Stakes, Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate. Godolphin could start him in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle on September 17 or follow the path of last year's Spring Champion winner Complacent and go through the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill on September 27.
John Thompson said he will push on with First Seal but in fillies' company. The Tea Rose Stakes is likely to be her next assignment after being run down by what might turn out to be a smart colt.
"She was the only filly in the race and she beat the rest of them easily. I think it might be the case of a good colt beating a filly," Thompson said after debriefing with jockey Hugh Bowman.
Bowman said: "I was wasn't dying on my run, the other horse just picked me up and put me away. She still went really good and I wouldn't be stopping with her after that."
Favourite Burning Passion was never a factor and jockey Brenton Avdulla indicated the colt didn't handle the going, saying "a slow-6 at Canterbury is different to a heavy-8 here."
