EXCLUSIVE: Methadone clinic almost ready to open and photo gallery

THIS is your first sneak peek inside the new methadone clinic at Mount Druitt Hospital.

Construction is going to schedule for the New Beginnings clinic to relocate from St Marys in the coming weeks.

Around 150 clients will be transferred to the $1.5 million facility, which has the potential to open seven days a week.

"It's a positive step for Mount Druitt residents who have had to travel outside the area to get treatment for substance addiction until now," Western Sydney Local Health District drug health director Nghi Phung told the Star.

"They travel far and wide to get treatment. Some of the clinicians working on the grounds say clients, particularly ones going to Blacktown, are keen for something local. People on the whole are happy this is occurring."

It is the first stage of a two-part project in which the Centre of Addiction Medicine in Mount Druitt town centre will be eventually co-located in the clinic.

Funding for the second stage is yet to be confirmed.

"This is our first public-private partnership in terms of service provision," Ms Phung said.

A feasibility study addressed concerns such as not the clinic not being in the main hospital building, access to public transport and location close to homes.

The clinic will be closely monitored by CCTV and security guards.

"It's the best site, determined by extensive consultation with stakeholders," Ms Phung said.

"It's been built and designed specifically for the needs of clients. The site was explored by a town planner who found that it's unlikely pose a significant effect to nearby homes. "
