A man was criticially injured when a car hit a power pole in Blacktown on Friday. His wife, who was a passenger, was also injured, but not as seriously.
The car crashed near the corner of Blacktown Road and St Martins Crescent about 1.30pm.
Police, emergency services and CareFlight teams rushed to the scene.
Fire rescue officers cut the doors off the car to free the couple.
The CareFlight doctor said the man, 72, sustained severe head and chest injuries.
His wife sustained less serious facial and head injuries.
After treating the couple at the scene, paramedics took them by ambulance to Westmead Hospital.
The man remains in intensive care.
