Take a drive this weekend to Watkins’ orchard at Wisemans Ferry for huge juicy mandarins and a picnic.
Watikin's Orchard at Wisemans Ferry is groaning with fruit-laden mandarin trees that are ready to be harvested and eaten now.
With more than 1500 trees, the ‘‘pick your own’’ orchard can guarantee fresh juicy mandarins that are in season until September.
The mandarins are sold for $10 a bucket, which is almost six kilograms.
Owner John Watkins, whose family has run the orchard since 1901, said the varieties of mandarins grown were Imperial and Emp-eror.
‘‘There’s a real difference between supermarket mandarins and freshly picked ones — they are extra juicy and extra large this season,’’ Mr Watkins said.
‘‘About 150 to 200 people come in every weekend to pick their own and have a picnic.’’. On Singleton Road, it opens 10am to 4pm on weekends.
