Seven Hills High league players compete for Hills Cup

Seven Hills High School’s junior and intermediate rugby league teams have made it through to The Hills Cup grand final undefeated for a second year.

Tomorrow both will take on schools at Wrights Road Reserve, Kellyville to defend their title, won last year against the Gilroy Catholic College junior and Marion College intermediate teams.

Coach Michael Jones said the Seven Hills High junior team will play against Gilroy Catholic College, their record 18-16 in the season. Its intermediate team will face an unknown quantity in Kellyville High School after a match between the two was washed out.

‘‘We never played this season,’’ Mr Jones said.

‘‘They’re also undefeated so who knows? I think they’re going to be a very strong team. From their record they’ve been doing pretty good.’’

Mr Jones said many of the teams’ players belonged to the same rugby league teams outside of school including at Lalor Park and Seven Hills junior league clubs, which helped with team cohesion on the field.

He said the parent community also get behind the team and help as much as possible.

‘‘The biggest thing for me is for them to have pride in their school,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re a small school — enough for you to know pretty much every student by name.

‘‘The fact that they can win and be competitive [against larger schools in the private sector] makes them feel good about themselves.

‘‘We do a lot of ball work, going through different sets at training.

‘‘I facilitate where needed but I don’t really need to, especially with the seniors, because they know each other so well from outside games.

‘‘Take them to the oval and they just get it done.’’
