The Hills' Sydney Eisteddfod winners

Young Hills residents have taken out top prizes in the speech and drama categories of the Sydney Eisteddfod.

Hudson Musty, 14, from Castle Hill, and 10-year-old Ella Tavner, from Glenhaven, took home first place in the Under 15 Featured Australian Poets-Not in Costume and the 10 and under Prepared Speech categories respectively.

Hudson scored an impressive 97 out of 100 for his performance of a difficult Gwen Harwood poem to get first place.

"It was quite a complicated piece, I worked with it and made it my own," Hudson said.

"The adjudicator singled him out and said he has a bright future," his mother Lynda said.

Despite his high score, Hudson said that the win was a surprise to him.

"I was not expecting it at all. I felt so much excitement," he said.

Ella on the other hand used a speech about bullying that she had previously used at school and reworked it for the eisteddfod to win her division.

"It was very nerve-racking but I was pretty excited," she said.

"I was overjoyed and so happy," she said when she got the news that she had won.

But for Hudson and Ella, winning the Sydney Eisteddfod this year isn't enough.

Both of them want to enter next year and defend their titles.
