MANY of us are turning to a stylist or personal shopper to improve or update our look.

Savvy retailers are offering in-store stylists and personalised shopping services to complete their customers' overall shopping experience.

Trish Murray, who has styled for celebrities and fashion magazines, said it has been only in the past seven years the average person had started to seek fashion help from the experts.

"They have never really had access to a stylist before," Ms Murray said.

"There are different services now being offered, including styling sessions for groups, bridal parties, corporate women's group style sessions which have become really popular."

To find the right stylist, Ms Murray suggests you do your research.

"A good stylist is like a good hairdresser," she said.

"The styling workshop should be fun and it shouldn't be intimidating — which is what the business sometimes makes people feel.

"They should make you feel really comfortable and be able to inspire you."

After establishing what a client's day-to-day life entails and what they hope to achieve from the styling session, Ms Murray will trawl through their wardrobe for outfits that reflect their personality and body shape.

Other outfits are given the flick.

She takes her clients through department stores looking for affordable and on-trend clothing and accessories.

Ms Murray said you don't need to have an A-list budget

She said she can work to any budget and even save her clients money.

"It's not about shopping from designer retailers," she said.

"As a stylist, it is my job to come in and eliminate those expensive mistakes.

"The feedback that I get from my customers is that they were never taught how to put things together and I come in and teach my clients to know their body shape."

Ms Murray said the best part of the job was seeing the smile after finding an outfit.

"When a woman looks good, they feel good," Ms Murray said.
