Big win for Winston Hills Little A's

The Hills Council has started re-turfing Gooden Drive Reserve's athletics field.

Athletes who use the Gooden Drive Reserve athletics field in Baulkham Hills can look forward to a better sporting experience this summer season.

That’s because The Hills Council is re-turfing the field and completing extensive drainage work at the reserve, which is the home ground of Winston Hills Little Athletics Centre.

The season runs from September to early March. The reserve is also used by schools year-round.

‘‘It’s going to provide a much-improved venue for the future of the club,’’ said the athletics club’s outgoing president Paul Byron.

‘‘We’ve negotiated that we would cooperatively undertake drainage and resurfacing work at the same time and council has a plan to continually upgrade the existing facilities.

‘‘The surface of the ground was badly affected by the drought we had several years ago, when we had water restrictions.

‘‘It wasn’t ideal for the conduct of Little Athletics, given the ages range from 3 to 1,  but we really think these improvements will encourage more athletes to register.’’

Mayor Michelle Byrne said $11.6 million was set aside in the draft 2014/2015 budget for maintenance of sports fields, parks, gardens and district parks.

The budget shows $65,000 for drainage at Gooden Drive Reserve, $79,169 for laser levelling and re-turfing, $29,000 for a sport and kitchen upgrade, and $30,000 for a long jump facility.

“Sports clubs have had a great start to the winter season with hardly any rainfall, but these drainage works will reduce the amount of time that the ground is closed for when it does happen to rain,’’ Cr Byrne said.

Founded 38 years ago, Winston Hills Little Athletics Centre had 490 registered athletes in the 2013/14 season.

Mr Byron said Gooden Reserve was provided to the community 37 years ago by the council before the M2 motorway was built.
