‘Give us a kiss goodbye to MS’

It’s Kiss Goodbye to MS month when MS Research Australia calls on supporters to dare, wear or share to fundraise for multiple sclerosis research.

When organisers say ‘‘dare’’ they mean get sponsored to do a ‘Kiss Goodbye to MS’ dare.

For ‘‘wear’’, wear a red lipstick — or anything red — and ‘‘share’’ by holding a ‘Kiss Goodbye to MS’ fundraising event.

Berowra MP Philip Ruddock (pictured above, right) went with ‘‘share’’ on Saturday when he joined Mike Hemingway (left), the support manager for the Wainwrights Coast2Coast MS Walk, at a fund-raising barbecue at Bunnings.

“Events like Kiss Goodbye, and the Coast2Coast walk are a statement that people with MS are doing it for themselves and achieving great things,” Mr Ruddock said.

“This is a great initiative for a great cause, and I encourage all those who can to wear, dare or share. Or to sponsor someone who can.”

Mr Hemingway will also join 17 Australians and three British in a 303-kilometre walk across England to help raise $150,000, to create awareness for MS in the UK.

While there he will launch the ‘Kiss Goodbye to MS’ brand, an Australian innovation.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system with more than 23,000 people living with the disease in Australia and more than two million diagnosed worldwide.

There is currently no known cure although there are a range of therapies and medications which aim to ease symptoms and slow the progression of disease.

“We are demonstrating that fundraising is a great way for people with MS, and their families and friends, to fight back against an unpredictable disease over which one has no control,’’ Mr Hemingway said.
