From garden to kitchen

ST CLAIR Public School's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden is flourishing.

Principal Judy Loader said the non-profit program had shown wonderful results at their school, which joined in 2011 and established vegetable gardens in April 2012.

Pupils in years 3 to 6, including two special needs classes, have since learnt basic kitchen safety and prepared meals with fresh produce from the garden.

Other NSW schools have also visited to see how participation in the garden is encouraged and fits with the school's curriculum.

"Our program aims to change students' often negative attitude to eating healthy food by providing a fun and engaging curriculum that allows them to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal produce that is both delicious and nutritious," Ms Loader said.

"We are pleased to be part of an initiative that is helping to make pleasurable food education accessible to every Australian primary school."

There are now 500 schools across Australia involved in the project, after another joined on May 6. The Medibank Community Fund is the principal partner of the Kitchen Garden Foundation.
