Hawkesbury animal shelter almost full

Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter is nearing capacity and begging for Hills residents to adopt a dog or cat in coming weeks.

All stray dogs and cats from The Hills Council area are sent to this shelter.

“Each of these animals is begging for a loving home, and unfortunately one is not always found,’’ The Hills mayor Michelle Byrne said.

Breeds available include Staffordshire bull terriers, border collies, cattle dogs and domestic cats.

All dogs are desexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and lifetime registered and available to adopt for $334.

The Friends of Hawkesbury Companion Shelter also offer financial assistance for residents looking to adopt.

“We have approximately 35,000 dogs in The Sydney Hills and all stray pets that our compliance officers pick up are taken to the Hawkesbury Animal Shelter," Councillor Byrne said.

“Unfortunately, if nobody adopts a pet they have to be put down — that’s why we need to find a home for these pets.’’
