LIFE'S TOO SHORT: KELLY
Oakville agriculture student Patricia Kelly has a simple goal this year.
"I’m living each day as it comes because life’s too short," Miss Kelly said.
That is why the 20-year-old jumps at every opportunity that comes her way, including the chance to become the next Hawkesbury Showgirl.
"I chose to enter the competition to become more involved with the community," Miss Kelly said.
"I think the competition brings the community together and gives the girls a chance to really become a part of the community."
Her passion for the Hawkesbury Show was also behind Miss Kelly’s decision to enter the competition.
"I believe the show is important to the community because it brings in local businesses and produce and it also brings people out of the area to our small community," she said.
"If I became the next Hawkesbury Showgirl I would hope to achieve a better community spirit and bring us all together."
PROUD OF HER REGION
Science student Olivia Leal wants to represent the Hawkesbury.
"I am proud of where I live — the rural nature of the area and the attitude of the people."
And the 20-year-old from Richmond may get the chance if she becomes the next Hawkesbury Showgirl.
"My first memory of Miss Hawkesbury Showgirl was having a photo on the front cover of the Gazette with that year’s impeccably presented winner and thinking ‘I want to be like that’," Miss Leal said.
"This competition highlights that young females can have an influence, as well as be positive, approachable role models."
If Miss Leal does take out the title next month, she said she won’t only aim to be a role model, but a warrior for the environment too.
"As a biology and environmental student, I would love to become more involved in the care of our natural bush and environmental initiatives, particularly encouraging other young people to do so," she said.
"With global food shortages a growing issue, improving farming techniques in the local area is a key interest of mine."
