Little Red speaks to kids and parents

Some actors wait around for leading roles but Gabrielle De Celis  wrote  herself one.

Currently playing at the Mamre House Little Red Riding Hood  is an adaption of the classic fairytale.

As a mother of two, DeCelis said she wanted to create a children’s play that spoke to adults.

‘‘I wanted the show to have multiple levels and the feedback from the parents has been they’ve been having as much fun as the kids,’’ she said.

‘‘They’ve loved it.’’

A resident of Penrith and the Blue Mountains, DeCelis was inspired to put her ideas on paper by the Acting Factory and a desire to ensure they kept pefroming locally written plays.

‘‘For the past six years  we've been performing plays by another local artist and we   ran out of his work,’’ she said.

‘‘The Acting Factory put out a call to all its members and I had some ideas.’’

As an Acting Factory member De Celis knew what would entertain the audience and be fun to perform which made her play a hit from the start.

However, following the success of Little Red Riding Hood she’s feeling the pressure to write something to top it.

‘‘There’s more pressure on you to make it work and make it good if it's your second work,’’ she said.

The play has attracted audience members from as far away as Perth and left them raving about the unexpected twists and hilarious characters.

De Celis said she enjoys convincing people that she wrote the play.

‘‘It’s quite gratifying for me when the audience are surprised I wrote it,’’ she said.

‘‘They think it must have been someone older or with more experience and I have to convince them it was me, it's nice.’’

Describing the play as a twisted fairytale, DeCelis said she hopes even more people will come to their closing night and share in the surprises and interaction.

‘‘You’ve  gotta look out for the wolf — he’s not what you expect,’’ she said.

‘‘But the biggest surprise is the woodsman who comes to  save the day.’’
