Supercars to hit Olympic Park

Sydney Olympic Park will once again play host to a stream of v8 supercars this weekend when the Sydney Telstra 500 gets under way.

Once again the sporting precinct in Sydney will be revved up and transformed into a 3.4km street circuit.

ANZ Stadium and Allphones Arena will have to take a back seat when the surrounding streets become the main attraction.

Jamie Whincup has already wrapped up the V8 Supercars Championship in 2012 which has denied a final Sydney showdown with last year’s Sunday race winner Mark Winterbottom.

No driver has won the race twice.

In 2009 Garth Tander claimed poll position and also took out the Saturday race.

The next day Lee Holdsworth claimed poll but was run down by James Courtney.

In 2010 Holdsworth claimed poll on both days.

On the Saturday Holdsworth was once again beaten, this time by Jonathon Webb, but he bounced back to claim the top podium position the next day.

Last year Will Davidson claimed poll on both days but was beaten by Craig Lowndes (Saturday) and Winterbottom (Sunday).

Whincup hasn’t been on the end of a favourable result at the western Sydney track.

Will he claim his first win at the western Sydney track or will Winterbottom be the first driver to win the race twice and go back-to-back.
