A NUMBER of Hawkesbury waterskiiers recorded outstanding results at the 2012 Waterski Racing and Marathon National Championships ran on Lake Bonney to Barmera in South Australia from January 9-13.
A mix of all water conditions throughout the week meant the all age races were rough while the engine races were much smoother and faster. Back to back World Junior Champion, Jack Houston, added four more national titles to his name, winning the Social Men’s, Under 19 Boys and Under 19 Boys Marathon categories, before teaming up with V8 race car driver Todd Kelly and observer Kevin Boylan to win the Under 8 Litre Engine Class.
Another Hawkesbury local in Rachael Stapleton won three national titles including the Social Women’s, Under 16 Girls and Under 16 Girls Marathon. She also finished second in the Unlimited Outboard class.
Jack Coaldrake from Wilberforce came second in 10-13 Boys only being pipped by a 0.7 second margin to Cooper Robertson . Coaldrake also placed fourth in the Unlimited Inboard class.
Ellen Jones of East Kurrajong was another to win her age division, taking out the 10-13 Girls. Blake Atkins of Ebenezer placed third in 13-16 Boys, with Jack Harrison of Pitt Town one spot behind in fourth. Harrison did however win the Under 16 Boys Marathon division while also finishing second to Houston in Social Men’s and second in the Unlimited Inboard class.
It was a successful trip for the Atkins clan with Ben Atkins taking out third place in Unlimited Inboard, Hayden Atkins finishing fourth in the Under 10 Boys and Shaun Atkins placing third in the MOC Engine class.
Meanwhile, Carlie Stapleton won the Under 10 Girls division in her first ever nationals.
Vanessa Eyles finished first in the Over 30 Women and second in the Social Women’s.
The boat crews from Stinga (featuring Greg Houston and Kevin Boylan), Still Sparken (featuring Darren Stapleton, Kevin Boylan and Shaun Atkins), Seven and Smack That (featuring Wayne Harrison, Mark Wallington and Darren Wells) and Underbelly (featuring Steven and Phil Atkins) all played an instrumental role in towing the local skiers to these results.
