GLOSSODIA star Nat Maraga is among four players who will have his named etched onto the Hawkesbury Open tennis trophy after the semi finals and finals of the tournament were washed out on Monday.
Maraga, 18, who was the No.4 seed and is ranked 86 in Australia, was declared a joint winner of the tournament along with fellow semi finalists Dane Propoggia (seeded 1), Jurek Stasiak (2) and Troy Lockwood (6).
He was scheduled to meet defending champion Stasiak in the semi finals on Monday morning after an excellent run through the draw in which he dropped just one set.
After an opening round bye, Maraga started his campaign with a perfect 6-0 6-0 drubbing of Luke Adamus in the second round and followed up with easy victories over Hayden Smith (6-3 6-0) and Adam Hecimovic (6-2 6-3) before he came from a set down to win a tough quarter final against the No.7 seed and Open regular Justin Astri 6-7 6-1 6-4.
Stasiak had a harder time of it, surviving a tense second round match against Justin Woodward 6-3 5-7 6-2 before building into the tournament with a 6-2 6-2 win over Michael Carnovale, a 6-2 6-4 dismissal of Brandon Woods and a battling 7-6 6-3 triumph over No.8 seed Glenn Knox.
Meanwhile, East Roseville's Melissa Anderson claimed her fourth successive title in the women's singles when she was one of the four semi finalists declared joint winners after the washout - also taking out the clean sweep of women's and mixed doubles for the second straight year.
Anderson, was the third seed, joined No.1 seed Tyra Calderwood, No.2 Mia Vriens and No.11 Ashley Keir as joint winners of the tournament after their semis and final were abandoned.
She was in vintage form, having dropped just 10 games in three straight sets victories, seven of those in a 6-2 7-5 third round win over No.13 seed Brooke Taylor.
The Hawkesbury's great local hope, Londonderry's Austra- lian No.136 Brooke Hardy, who went into the tournament with the No.5 beside her name, looked in excellent touch as she easily accounted for Aleksandra Arcaba (6-4 6-3) and No.10 seed Mihaela Draca (6-3 6-2) before finding the Australian No.28 Calderwood too hot to handle in the quarter finals, going down 6-2 6-2.
Calderwood dropped just nine games in three matches and was set to meet Anderson in a mouthwatering semi final.
Three other locals were beaten in the second round, with Tahnee Edgecombe scoring a first round win over Mila Storch before falling to Draca, No.12 seed May Johnson beating Dael McKenna before losing in an upset to Brooke Atterton, Danica Barbagallo downing Aimee Buckland and going out to Taylor, while Olivia Buccini lost 6-1 6-4 in the first round to No.16 seed Ivana Kafedjiyska.
In the men's doubles, Jason Horne and Tim White made the second round before losing 6-2 6-4 to No.2 seeds Jay Andrijic from Penrith and Knox, with the higher ranked pair going on to reach the semis and be declared joint winners along with Astri and Lockwood, Tyrone Smart and Cameron Smith and Jeremy White and Justin Woodward.
Hardy didn't enjoy the same success in the women's doubles with partner Serena Liu, the fourth seeds suffering a shock first 9-3 thrashing from eventual semi finalists Kafedjiyska and Ashley Keir.
Anderson and Thompson shared a three-way title with Bree and Tyra Calderwood and Atterton and Alison Pool, whose semi was abandoned.
Edgecombe and her partner Caitlin Billingham lost to Hardy and Liu's conquerors in the second round.
There was much better news in the mixed doubles, where Tim White and Edgecombe were among the semi finalists declared as joint winners, as was Hardy and her partner Propoggia.
White and Edgecombe beat third seeds Mihan Ruzi and Draca 9-3 in the second round and were due to meet No.1 seeds Knox and Anderson in the semis, while Hardy and Propoggia, the No.2 seed, would have been favoured to beat Brandon Woods and Ivana Vlakic in their semi.
The only competition to be completed was the special women's doubles, which was won by No.1 seed Fiona Roseby and Hawkesbury's Kelly Thomas, who beat Angela Kelly and Sarah O'Brien 6-1 6-2 on Sunday night.
Of the other home town hopes to be declared joint winners, David Pennycuick and Alex Chia were in the B Grade men's singles semis, Bethany Cullen was still alive in the B Grade women's singles, Pennycuick and Lisa Dent were in the final of the B Grade mixed doubles, Sophia Buccini had made the final of the C grade women's singles and Pennycuick and Luke Johnson were in the special men's doubles semis.
