THE Windsor Wolves unveiled their plethora of quality recruits and lived up to their off-season expectations when they outclassed the Shellharbour Dragons 26-12 for the ideal start to the NSW Cup season at The Den on Sunday.
Boosted by the late inclusion of Panthers' centre Brad Tighe, the Wolves outlasted a highly regarded Dragons' team that, with eight St George-Illawarra players, had three more NRL listees than Windsor.
Experienced recruit David Tangata-Toa was impressive on debut, as was frontrow enforcer Aaron Sweeney, giving the necessary protection for wily halfback Craig Trindall to terrorise the Dragons fullback with several towering bombs.
Windsor led 14-12 at half time and the match was in the balance, but the home team came out snarling after the break and completed a 40-minute shutout of the Dragons.
Interchange forward Tangata-Toa and Shennelle Haumono scored tries, while centres Tighe and Sandon Earl added four pointers on debut, and sharpshooter Trindall kicked five goals from five attempts.
Cronulla dominated the early game of the double header, beating Auckland 36-18 to take top spot and give the Wolves an insight into what they need to do to beat the Vulcans in their round two clash, which will be played at The Den at 3pm on Saturday.
The clash will be followed by the Gary Longhurst Shield showdown against Mudgee at 4.30pm as the Wolves attempt to regain the trophy named after a great of both clubs.
This will be third battle for the Shield as the clubs again come together to celebrate the life and career of a great player and bloke and to raise money to combat Motor Neurone Disease.
