THE Windsor Wolves still cling to top spot, but only by the skin of their teeth, following a disappointing loss to the Entrance Tigers in Round Nine of the Bundy Red Cup at the Windsor Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
With persistent showers soaking the ground and turning the ball into a cake of soap, neither side adjusted to the conditions and the top of the table clash turned into an ugly scrap.
The Wolves had looked set to continue on their winning ways as they raced out to a 10-0 lead inside the first ten minutes.
Centre Matt Hall crossed for the opener, before winger Michael Fualalo found himself on the end of a slick backline move to dive over in the corner. Trevor Bolt converted from the sideline to give the Wolves an early advantage.
In the twentieth minute, a mistake in the Windsor half allowed the Entrance to turn a well-rehearsed inside ball into points as their fullback dived over under the posts to score untouched.
Both sides became frustrated with errors and poor completion rates. A Windsor ruck infringement nine minutes out from the break led to another Tigers four-pointer. The successful conversion gave the visitors a 12-10 lead at halftime.
The Wolves were unlucky to go further behind in the opening stages of the second half, when a horrible pass found the boot of the Tigers winger who re-gathered and scored.
But luck soon turned in favour of the home side, as a Tigers pass on the Windsor 20 metres line was plucked from the air by Trevor Bolt, who streaked 80 metres and converted his own try to level the scores at 16-all.
As the rain tumbled from above, the dour affair became scrappy and ill-discipline crept into the Windsor outfit.
Skipper Ben Stewart was irate after a series of back-to-back penalties gave the Entrance all the favours late in the half.
The deadlock was finally broken when from a scrum 20 metres out from the Wolves line, the Entrance halfback placed a kick behind the defence for his flying winger to dive on and score adjacent to the posts.
Despite being invited back into the game through several mistakes from their opposition, the Wolves couldn't finish any of their half-chances in the dying stages and the score remained 22-16 to the Entrance at the siren.
Best for the Wolves were centre Danny Chiha, who proved a handful for the Tigers defence, while prop Faalavasu Pitone got through a mountain of work for the home side. Young fullback Vince Morunga diffused several attacking raids at the back.
The Wolves will attempt to maintain their one point buffer on the ladder when they travel to Nepean Rugby Park to face Brothers on Sunday June 6 at 3pm.
The NSW Cup side slipped to its second straight defeat in an absolute nail-biter against the Newtown Jets at Windsor on Saturday night.
After trailing 12-0 just 15 minutes into the match, Windsor hit back to level the scores with tries to Zoram Watene and Josh Bateman.
The Wolves went to the break behind 16-12, but came out hungry in the second half and played some terrific attacking football.
Two outstanding individual tries to young guns Wade Graham and Ali Beale gave Windsor a 24-16 lead with 18 minutes remaining.
But unforced errors cost the home side dearly, as Newtown ran in two converted tries in the next ten minutes to snatch victory.
Man of the Match went to 19 year-old Ali Beale with a try and four goals, while Wade Graham and Josh Bateman had strong games.
The Wolves travel to Henson Park this Saturday June 5 to take on the Cronulla Sharks. Kickoff is 1pm.
