THE Windsor Wolves' hopes of rising up the NSW Cup ladder this season received a significant boost when they rose above 20 opponents to win the Cabramatta International Nines pre-season tournament at Cabra's New Era Stadium on Saturday night.
With new coach Guy Missio looking on as Bundaberg Red Cup boss Bob Beveridge took control of the team, the Wolves won five straight games of nine minute halves to claim the Cup as they start their campaign to improve on last season's second last placed finish.
Star halfback Craig Trindall was the hero for Windsor as he marshaled his new look team around the park, while Brad Clarke was also in sensational touch in wet conditions in front of a healthy pre-season crowd of 3500 people.
Against three-time finalist Balmain-Ryde-Eastwood, it didn't take long for the Wolves to gain the upper hand when Trindall sliced through the defence on their first possession to score the opening try in the third minute, and he converted for a 6-0 lead.
Just two minutes later Windsor was in again when five-eighth recruit Vincent Morunga pounced on his own grubber to score under the posts and set up a 12-0 lead at the change of ends.
Balmain lifted and attacked the Windsor line immediately on the restart, with NSW Cup Player of the Year David Gower cutting the margin to six, and it looked like the Tigers would run over the top when referee Gavin West banished another recruit in Ben Vengoa to the sinbin for repeated infringements by his team.
But the Wolves held firm for the last five minutes despite being camped on their own line to record a 12-6 victory and claim the trophy in heavy rain.
Earlier in the day, the Wolves beat Cabramatta's No.1 team 16-4 and Campbelltown's No.3 line-up 22-4 in the pool matches before overcoming Fiji Australia 32-16 in an entertaining quarter final and flogging Cook Islands 22-0 in the semis.
