Greentree sprints to national title

15 Apr, 2009 12:00 AM
EXCITING young East Kurrajong powerboat racer Dylan Greentree turned in an outstanding driving exhibition to win the Australian Formula Future J3 championship at Raymond Terrace last month.

The victory is his third national title, but his first in three years.

Competing over a three-race series, Greentree got off to a flying start in the event by picking up a first and a second from the first two races to gain a healthy lead over his rivals with one race to run.

However, he thought he had lost his opportunity when his propeller got entangled in weeds early in the final race, and he had to use his experience in taking the tighter lines and rougher part of the course to finish in fifth place and claim the title by just two points.

Greentree previously won the J1 class in 2005 and J2 in 2006, but this one would be sweeter as his comeback championships after having his previous race boat stolen from his home two years ago.

He managed to buy a new boat with assistance from his grandfather Phil and sponsors Assassin Pest Control, BG Engines, Blakes Marine and Butler Used Vehicles, and it was that boat he piloted to glory on the Hunter.

Greentree has set his sights on a home river win when he takes on the junior division of the 74th Bridge to Bridge Powerboat Classic on May 3 with the aim of going two better than last year's third placing.
