IF YOU’RE looking for Hawkesbury Martial Arts black belt Bianca Gallo, she’s not here.
The 15-year-old has just touched down in Greece in the mainland island of Evia to compete in the World Karate Federation’s Youth World Cup.
Bianca will spend almost three weeks in the city of Chilkada to partake in a training camp and karate tournament where she will represent Australia in the 16/17 Under 53kilogram division.
She was selected for the Australian team after being placed third at the Australian Open Karate Championships which took place in Melbourne in April.
If she performs well in Greece, Bianca will have the opportunity to be selected for the karate federation’s Junior World Titles to be held in Morocco this November.
“I’m actually quite confident,” Bianca said.
“It will definitely be a challenge because some of the greatest fighters in my division will be competing but I think it is something I can win.
“I train six days a week for up to five hours at a time so I am fairly dedicated and determined to do well. But it will be hard.”
Someone who is even more confident of Bianca doing well is her sensei, Hawkesbury Martial Arts chief instructor, Daniel Spice.
“She will win,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”
“She’s a NSW champion and an Australian representative who was selected in an age division where she will be competing against people up to two years older than her. That’s how good she is.”
And Spice’s kudos were not made in haste. Bianca holds a world title after she won gold at the Karate Budokan World Championships at Mumbai in November last year.
The martial art is also something that looks to be genetic in the Gallo family with her father Mario, sisters Alexandria and Cassandra, and brother Eugenio all having excelled in karate.
In fact, Alexandria, 13, and Eugenio, 11, both won gold medals in April, however, were too young to be selected for Greece, which does not hold competitions for competitors under 14.
Bianca will compete this Saturday and should know whether she makes the Moroccan team early next week.
