Daniel Spice's martial artists on top of the world

30 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
JUST when you thought that the talent at Daniel Spice's Hawkesbury Martial Arts couldn't get any better, its roster of World Champions almost doubled overnight.

Two of the number one juniors in the world, Bianca and Alexandra Gallo, have been joined by another pair of siblings in Aaron and Brayden McMahon, to form a quartet at the Richmond Dojo that certainly packs plenty of punch.

"We now realistically have the two best male and female fighters in their age groups in the world training here," Sensei Spice said.

The McMahon boys, both students at Richmond High, made the switch to the HMA club after previously training in Blacktown.

Their father John, a former state and national title holder himself, said that the decision to link with Spice was an obvious choice for the boys.

"We've known Daniel for many years, he's fantastic with the kids and the entire Dojo is such a supportive environment," he said.

"It's a good level of competition and it'll help the boys to have the two girls (Bianca and Alexandra) in their age groups to train with and push them."

The trophy cabinet at the McMahon household boasts an impressive array of silverware - Aaron, 16, is a seven-time state and four-time national champion, while his brother Brayden, 14, has three state and an amazing six national titles to his credit.

The pair will continue to fine-tune their skills under the watchful eye of their new Sensei, with the Copenhagen Open in October their major target for the year.

But first on the map is the National titles in August, with Brayden also travelling to Tahiti for the Oceania Karate Championships in September.

Their HMA teammates, the Gallo's, have benefited from the addition of the two new training partners.

"It's great to have the boys (Aaron and Brayden) here now," Bianca said.

"Alexandra and I are still relatively new to the sport, so it's good to train and learn from them."

The girls are currently in a training camp in Greece alongside some of the best young fighters in the world, all gearing up for the World Youth Cup, beginning on July 3.

With the already promising talent pool continuing to build, the future looks bright for karate in the Hawkesbury.

One thing is for certain ? Gallo and McMahon are two names we'll be hearing a lot more of in the future.
