THE Nor-West Jets disapp-ointing end to the AFL Syd- ney season was tempered when star rover/forward Aaron Clayden won the McFarlane Medal for the Division Three league's best and fairest player at Pyrmont's Doltone House on Monday night.
Clayden (right), who also claimed the goalkicking award after kicking nine goals in the final round finish with 48 and overtake UNSW-Eastern Sub- urbs' season-long leader Cas- ey Stephens, polled 29 votes to win the award by 10 votes from Bulldog Mark Dixon.
The Jets had a good night at the count, with Gerard Smits finishing sixth in the Division Three count on 11 votes, while Chris Collins (4th on 12), Chris Graf (5th on 11), Adam Newton (6th on 10) and Marty Ingham (6th on 10) all made the top 10 in the Armstrong Medal in Division Four which was won by Moorebank's Rob- bie Morrison on 15.
"It's always good to win individual accolades and be rewar- ded for your personal endeavours and I'm honoured, but it would have been nice to have got the flag, which is what every club and every individual strives for," Clayden said.
"I didn't think I was a chan- ce a couple of weeks out but a few things dropped with my teammates telling me I was a shoo in ? I didn't think much of it until then.
"I thought my season could have been stronger by my own standards, I wasn't too bad in my fitness, maybe I could have strived for a little bit more, but as far as the year goes I didn't think I did too bad but I definitely wasn't at the top of my game."
The efforts saw the club finish third in the AFL Sydney Club Championship.
The club will hold its vote count and presentation night, including music by The Gene- rators, at the Windsor RSL Club on Friday, September 25, from 7pm, with tickets cos- ting $60 and being available at taraputland@ymail.com
