HAWKESBURY’S Caleb Turner will head to Tasmania this weekend to represent NSW Combined High Schools at the School Sport Australia under 15 cricket championships.
The allrounder was chosen for the state team after impressing in trial matches against NSW Combined Independent Schools and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges. Turner took two wickets in the first trial match and scored 47 runs in the second outing.
His performances for Hawkesbury in the prestigious under 16 AW Green Shield competition also did him plenty of favours.
The 15-year-old was the Hawks’ leading run-scorer in that competition with 163 runs at an average of 27.2.
“Of course I was really happy and over the moon when I found out I got picked,” Turner said.
“I’ve played Emerging Blues before but that’s really just a city-based squad, so I’m expecting some really tough competition when we get down to Tasmania.”
As well as being an extremely talented left-handed batsman, Turner also possess the unique ability to bowl left-arm orthodox spin and medium pace.
“I just bowl whatever I’m told really,” Turner said
“It just depends on the wicket type, what other bowlers we have and stuff like that.”
After making the Hawkesbury Green Shield side as a 14-year-old last year, Turner made the step-up to grade cricket for the first time this season.
He said the experience of playing for Hawkesbury against adults and other talented youngsters in the Sydney Cricket Association competition has helped with his development.
“Green Shield is probably a pretty important stepping stone to grade and playing grade cricket has increased my skills a lot,” Turner said.
“It’s been really good and a lot of fun so far.”
Turner’s NSW team will start their tournament with a match against Victoria on Sunday. The grand final of the championships will be held on March 2 while an Australian under 15s team will also be chosen for a tour of India later in the year.
