Taylor to put Aussie hopes on the line

24 Feb, 2010 11:27 AM
RICHMOND boxer Tammy Taylor qualified to compete at the final selection trials for the Australian team to contest the World Women's Games with two dominant bouts against heavier fighters earlier this month.

Taylor, a 69kg fighter, step- ped up to the 75kg division for the trials with only one other entrant, yet-to-debut 16-year-old Ramona Stevenson, in her pet weight division, and she beat both entrants in that category to win NSW's 75kg entry for Perth.

However, she has put the tic- ket to the Australian selection trials in Fremantle next month on the line to fight Stevenson for the 69kg berth at the Richmond Boxing Club's Friday Night Fights at the Richmond Club next Friday night, March 5.

That is, of course, if the NSW Boxing Federation sanctions the fight, with laws stopping bouts between boxers aged more than 22 months apart, although Taylor's coach John Barber is confident it won't be stopped as it would be tough to allow Stevenson to go to Perth without having had a fight.

Should Taylor fall to Stevenson, Barber said Taylor would be unlikely to contest the 75kg division in Perth.

Meanwhile, Trueman Robb narrowly missed out on winn- ing his NSW spot at the Australian selection trials for the World Youth Games after losing the final of the 69kg junior division to the more experienced Josh Diab, who went on to also win the open division of the same weight category.

Taylor and Robb will both be part of an action packed card at the Richmond Club on Friday week, with the program being headed by Australian featherweight champion Joel Brunker, who will step up to box New Zealand's No.1 lightweight Manu Emery.

Ryan Stinson will feature in the other pro bout against Queenslander Mark Sarrinto, a winner of his only fight, while Windsor Boxing Club members Daniel Lewis, Steve Davidson and Ashley Hall will be others among the 10 amateur fights.

Action starts at 7.30pm next Friday night, with tickets costing $35 for adults and $25 for pensioners, while VIP tickets are available for $125 per head in tables of 10.

Call Barber on 0415 653 920 to reserve your tickets.
