Tammy Taylor fights at home at last

28 Oct, 2009 09:30 AM
IT'S taken 18 months of tireless campaigning, but Kurrajong's female boxer Tammy Taylor will finally make her long-awaited home debut at the Richmond Boxing Club's Friday Fight Night at the Richmond Club this Friday.

Taylor has been petitioning and pushing NSW Boxing officials to come into line with the rest of Australia without rest, and has endured a frustrating wait for paperwork to break the red tape since the decision to allow female boxing was made six months ago.

Having been a late withdrawal from the last two Richmond cards because of the delay in that paperwork, she is champing at the bit to get in the ring and show her local fans just what she is made of when she takes on undefeated Taree fighter Nerida Potter.

Taylor actually made her NSW debut two weeks ago with a tight two-point loss in the final of the inaugural NSW State Championship, but this is the fight she has been waiting for.

"It's been 24 years since girls were allowed to box in Australia so there's a lot of girls other than me who have been signing petitions for a long time," she said.

"It was frustrating and stupid, I don't understand what the wait was for, they said they were waiting for the paperwork to coincide with other states, but it just seemed like another excuse to me.

"I think it had to happen, in this day and age with equal opportunities, you've got women going to the Olympics and on the front line in the military, so I think it had to come through. They just couldn't find any more excuses really.

"I'm absolutely ready, I had a really hard fight last week and I only lost on a couple of points.

"I've seen her fight before which is lucky for me.

"I know she's pretty straight, tall and strong. I'll try to get a plan toge- ther with (coach) John (Barber) to take her on."

Taylor will join seven other Haw- kesbury amateur fighters, as well as Richmond pros Joel Brunker and Ryan Stinson, on a packed 10-fight card on Friday night.

Brunker will make his first home appearance as the Australian fea- therweight champion when he tak- es on Thailand's Mongkolchai Sing- manasak in a non-title bout, while Stinson will look to open his professional account against Mhelvin Hernandez.

Windsor Boxing Club's Austra- lian Golden Gloves champion Dan- iel Lewis has been added to the program and will fight St Marys' Val- entine Borg, while his clubmate Ash- ley Hall will also be in action.

The other Richmond Boxing Club fighters will be headed by NSW silver medallist Alex Mercer, who meets Dylan Terry, Adam Carter, Matt Jac- kett and debutants Andrew Sam- bell and Jordon Glover.

The club will also be auctioning two framed photos of 'The Greatest' Muhammed Ali, with the first bout scheduled for 7.30pm this Friday night.

Tickets are $35 per head, $20 for under 16s and $80 for a family ticket, while fully catered corporate tab- les of 10 are available at $125 per head. Call Barber on 0415 653 920.
