THE Hawkesbury might be a long way from Hollywood, but there's certainly been a 'Tinseltown' feel to the district since film crews rolled in yesterday to shoot for the new Underbelly series.
While filming began in Freemans Reach earlier than expected when crews braved yesterday's heat, the Gazette has been led to believe the car park of Richmond's very own Commonwealth Bank will provide the setting for one of the series' biggest turning points.
'Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities' will follow the thriving illegal heroin and marijuana trade of the 1970s and '80s, exploring the 1977 murder of Liberal politician and anti-drugs campaigner Donald Mackay in Griffith.
The 43-year old disappeared from a hotel car park on July 15, 1977 - a scene it is believed will be recreated in the East Market Street car park tomorrow afternoon.
Meanwhile, the furniture shop Mr Mackay owned and ran in Griffith, Mackays Furniture, has been reconstructed in the building that once housed 'Retravision', opposite Westpac Bank on West Market Street.
In its application to Hawkesbury City Council for approval to film in the district, the production team of the Channel 9 hit series stated the closure of Windsor Street between East and West Market streets in Richmond would take place from 6-11am on Tuesday, October 28.
During this time a range of vehicles made between 1965 and 1977 will be parked along Windsor Street to lend authenticity to the production.
Intermittent traffic disruptions elsewhere in Richmond are expected throughout the two days of filming, but the application stated impact would be minimal with cars held up for no longer than two minutes at a time.
