Vistors low but blues thrives at Sydney Blues Festival in Windsor

28 Oct, 2009 09:31 AM
WHILE the feedback from punters was good, the numbers just weren't there at the Sydney Blues Festival on the weekend.

The organisers were a little disappointed, but they are hoping next year will be bigger and better.

One of the promoters, Peter Fricker, said attendance may have been about 1000 but they were still doing the figures.

"Our numbers weren't as good as we wanted...but we had a lot saying it's the best festival they've been to in ages," Mr Fricker said.

He said one of the problems was accommodation, and an option for next year might be to set up a camp site.

Fellow promoter Bob Mannix said organising the venues so they are closer together might also be on the cards.

Most festival goers chose to stay in the top end of town near the Macquarie Arms and The Fitzroy Hotel, with some of the acts who were performing at the other end of town losing out on the crowds.

James Glendenning, who was responsible for booking the bands said he received positive feedback from the festival goers.

"Everyone I spoke to said they enjoyed the music and they had a great time," he said.

"I had punters coming up to me saying 'You have to do it again'."

While the numbers were not quite what they had anticipated, the weather also played a part in taming the crowds.

Rain on Sunday meant the markets in Windsor Mall were quiet , and most certainly put off some of the usual day trippers from Sydney.

Despite this, headlining acts like Chase the Sun still drew good crowds on Sunday afternoon, even if the fans were a little soggy.

Mr Fricker said next year's festival would hinge upon whether they can secure another big sponsor, without which it might not go ahead.

It was a great weekend despite the low numbers. The venues at the 'low' end of town were definitely the best. Full marks going to "On the Green" just great. Let's hope a decent sponsor will come to the party next year.

I think a Sydney Blues festival was well overdue and that Windsor is a GREAT place to host it. I certainly enjoyed every bit of it and it was a success as far as I am concerned. Congratulation to the organizers and the town of Windsor, it was massive task to undertake. However in the months leading up to it I thought the festival could have been better advertised . I saw no articles in The Drum Media for instance and the program was announced kind of late. I also think the ticketing system could be improved, it was difficult to navigate the website for tickets and it was also unclear that punters could purchase tickets on the day at the festival shop. Some other little improvements I could see apart from those mentioned in the article which I aggree with, would be selling CD's of the participants in the festival shop and feedback forms included in every programs. All that been said I DID have a great time Thanks again

The promoter needed to put on more bus services to cater to locals, also to broaden their marketing which was prett poor as we only found out by chance on 89.9. We found ourself finding hard to get home and a local shuttel bus like what the clubs run would have for sure allowed locals to kick back and have a drink and enjoy themselfs. Also the option of camping would be great but weather and securtiy is always an added cost. Great nite otherwise.
