Tourism numbers neither up or down

20 Jan, 2010 01:32 PM
Tourism was a little hit and miss over the holiday period, with some businesses reporting a small influx in tourists and others experienced a downturn.

According to the Visitor Information Centre at Clarendon, numbers were down due to bad weather.

About 450 people stopped in at the centre, looking for information, maps, directions, accommodation, attractions, retail stores, plus restaurants and cafes.

The majority of visitors came from Sydney and surrounds, interstate, and about 100 from overseas.

Despite the downturn, The Butterfly Farm and Ski Garden reported a fairly busy holiday season, especially in the lead up to Christmas and during the school holidays.

The Butterfly Farm's Raelene Hodgskin said slightly damp weather around Christmas did have an impact on business, but they have still been busy throughout January.

"There are still a lot of travellers," she said.

"Most are out of area and a few are interstate. Some stop in on their way to Tamworth for the country music festival."

Ms Hodgskin said business is still going strong, with the accommodation booked out for this weekend.

"It's been on par, if not a little bit busier than last year," she said.

"Most customers come from places like Campbelltown and Camden, I think they don't want to travel too far.

"And then they all shop locally in Windsor."

Meanwhile, Martin Dudley from Wattle Grove Bed and Breakfast said business was down about 40 per cent on last year.

"In business it's always hard unless you're an ice-cream salesman at the beach. I think people who can still afford to travel are going overseas instead of somewhere closer," Mr Dudley said.

"I think it's partly to do with the state of the economy and the strength of the Aussie dollar."

But Mr Dudley said he was optimistic business will "bounce back".
