THREE accidents within three weeks on the same stretch of road at Windsor bridge has prompted the questions whether delays to the bridge upgrade – which would see the road realigned for better visibility – are to blame.
An 18-year-old Bligh Park man was left in a critical, and later stable condition after the most recent crash occurred on Sunday night, which saw his car collide with a garbage truck at the intersection of Freemans Reach Road.
“There’s accidents on that bridge every day, not once a week, every day,” Councillor Porter told the Gazette yesterday.
Cr Porter, who has been campaigning for the bridge to be replaced since 2004, is angered the upgrading process is taking so long. He believes drivers are constantly putting their lives at risk by using the old bridge.
Det Insp Bryson Anderson, confirmed that police and emergency services attended a number of collisions at this intersection in the past month, the most recent involving the 18-year-old on Sunday, May 16, at about 8.15pm.
He said the Ford ute was travelling east on Freemans Reach Road when it collided with a garbage truck as it was turning right into Wilberforce Road. The driver, on a P1 licence (red P-plates), is now in a stable condition in Westmead Hospital. He was the sole occupant of the ute. The male truck driver was not injured and was taken to Hawkesbury Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
A crime scene was established with officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit conducting inquiries into the cause of the collision.
Anyone with information is urged to call the crash investigation unit on 8882 1458 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
