Police fire first taser

04 Nov, 2009 12:00 AM
POLICE used a taser gun to subdue a man brandishing knives in a siege at McGraths Hill last Thursday.

In the first instance of a taser being deployed in the Hawkesbury, police responded to a domestic incident in Scarvell Avenue at about 11.20pm.

When officers arrived at the scene they were confronted by a 35-year-old male at the front door.

Police noticed two knives on the kitchen table before the man slammed the door in the face of officers.

The man was asked to come out of the home but he refused, threatening officers with his dogs and with the knives.

Police surrounded the home, negotiating with the man for 90 minutes. He eventually confronted police outside armed with a knife in each hand.

He was told to drop the knives but refused, forcing police to release the taser.

The man was subsequently arrested, taken back to Windsor Police Station and charged with 11 offences.

These included six counts of assaulting police and one count of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful arrest. Police will allege the man was heavily intoxicated during the ordeal.

Acting Superintendent Steve Blackmore said police confronted the hostile, armed man and in this instance, deployed the taser which allowed the incident to be resolved without harm to either police or the offender.

n A Taser is an electroshock weapon that uses a jolt of electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles.
