New constable at Windsor

16 Sep, 2009 01:00 AM
A former labourer and store manager is the newest addition to Windsor Police Station.

Probationary Constable Michael Powell began his career in blue two weeks ago after graduating on August 28 from Goulburn's NSW Police Force College.

The 27-year-old is originally from Newcastle and told The Gazette his interest in the police force came only recently.

"When I was 19 a career in the police force was the last thing on my mind, but during the past five years or so I've though about it a lot more," he said.

"Finally I decided to go for it and enrolled, ending up at the in Goulburn in the June intake."

Mr Powell endured four months of intense training, which he will now put into practice as a general duties police officer. He admitted Windsor wasn't among his list of preferred stations in which to work, instead nominating Newcastle and some inner-city command posts, but said the Hawkesbury was quickly growing on him.

"It seems like a really nice place and I've been told you get to see a good cross-section of events here, which is good," he said.

"I think the combination of the river, the country aspect of the Hawkesbury and the suburban areas should help to further my skills and knowledge."

Mr Powell hopes to head into tactical response or the rescue squad when he completes his three years of general duties.

Penrith local area command, which services Londonderry, received one new recruit, while Quakers Hill, Blue Mountains and The Hills commands welcomed two new officers.
