Lizard eats MP: Just another day in 'Iguana Gate'

3/07/2008 11:11:00 AM
HAWKESBURY MP Ray Williams took centre stage as the ‘Iguana Gate’ controversy dominated State Parliament last week, feigning attack by a toy lizard during question time.

His playful antics, however, were frowned upon and managed to get him ejected from the lower house.

The toy made an appearance as Premier Morris Iemma rose to answer a question about the incident at Iguana’s Waterfront Bar at Gosford, involving John Della

Bosca and his wife, Federal Labor MP Belinda Neal.

While the stunt prompted a few laughs, Speaker Richard Torbay took a dim view of the charades and removed Mr Williams from the house. Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell publicly defended the relatively new MP.

“I have spoken to Ray Williams about parliamentary standards but, in his defence, Morris Iemma’s made a joke this week in not answering questions about the [Iguana’s] affair,” he said.
