Joe Hockey visits Hawkesbury

01 Jul, 2009 04:04 PM
SHADOW Treasurer Joe Hockey made a quick stop to the Hawkesbury on Monday, visiting local business HaulTruck Australia at Windsor as part of his itinerary.

The visit was organised by Member for Greenway Louise Markus who was approached by the small business' managing director Frank Cocks over the Federal Government's increase in the investment tax break for small business purchases of new vehicles.

In what was originally a 30 per cent rebate, small businesses buying new vehicles will be able to claim a bonus tax deduction of up to 50 percent on the cost of the purchase.

HaulTruck Australia however, does not sell new vehicles but specialises in rebuilding trucks in the earthmoving sector, which he says stimulates no incentive to buyers to consider second-hand vehicles, in turn, encouraging money to be spent overseas.

Mr Cocks wrote to Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan in relation to the issue which received no reply, sparking Ms Markus to organise the meeting with Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey and Mr Cocks.

"If Mr Swan is serious about helping small business he would acknowledge that this tax break disadvantages a great number of small businesses who are deemed ineligible for this rebate," Mr Hockey said.

"The Treasurer needs to extend the tax break so that it includes used assets which would in effect, keep money in Australia so that small businesses like used car businesses and HaulTruck Australia can not be left out."

Mr Cocks went on to say that more Australian jobs would also be retained and created due to the local input and labour required, as compared to overseas input and labour used in the transactions involving imports of new assets.

"Where the Government thinks they are helping Australian businesses and the Australian economy, the opposite is true," Mr Cocks said. "By effectively reducing the cost price of a new asset by 50 per cent, it is instantly devaluing any comparable used asset, as the demand and prices for used assets reduces. It defeats the logic of providing the tax break in the first place."

Mr Hockey was also in town to meet and greet with businesses at Stanhope Gardens Shopping Village, students at St Paul's Grammar and financiers and managers at local banks.
